A configurator is a rules engine with a visual interface
Customers select dimensions, colors, materials and options. The system must validate combinations, update the preview and calculate the result. That is why two configurators that look similar can require very different engineering effort.
2D and 3D are different scopes
2D previews can use image or SVG layers. 3D needs models, materials, camera controls, lighting, geometry optimization and mobile interaction. High-quality WebGL also depends on the source models.
Main cost drivers
- Number of product models and variants.
- Compatibility rules.
- Preview quality.
- Price formulas.
- Saved/shareable configurations.
- CRM or lead integration.
- Touch controls and mobile performance.
A useful estimate starts with the option matrix, not with the word “3D”.
Compare the scope with a realistic budget.
The calculator provides a starting reference; complex functionality is estimated from the actual scope and architecture.
